Guwahati, Sept. 27 -- The Central government has extended the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in three districts of Assam for a period of six months starting October 1.
A statement issued by the Assam Home and Political Department today said the state government had recommended to the Centre that the "Disturbed Area" status under AFSPA be extended in Tinsukia, Charaideo, and Sivasagar districts for an additional six months.
The state government noted that law and order in Assam has improved significantly due to sustained efforts and proactive counterinsurgency measures by security forces.
