Addis Ababa/Mogadishu, July 26 -- African Union (AU) troops backed by Somali security forces thwarted an attack on military bases by the extremist Al-Shabaab group in Sabiid-Anole town, located southwest of the capital Mogadishu.

The AU Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) said Al-Shabab fighters had launched a coordinated attack on military bases manned by AU troops and Somali National Armed Forces in the early hours of the day yesterday.

"The joint forces successfully repelled the terrorists, forcing them to retreat swiftly," AUSSOM said in a statement.
