Kabul, July 31 -- Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani on Friday ordered the release of 500 Taliban prisoners in response to the militant group's three-day ceasefire announcement.

Expressing his hope that the truce will be extended, Ghani, in a televised address, said that 500 prisoners will be released within the next four days.

"Afghan government has released 4,600 Taliban prisoners so far and the 500 prisoners that would now be released are not part of the list given to the Afghan government by the Taliban", Tolo news quoted Ghani as saying.

Reasoning that he alone cannot decide on the release of the 400 Taliban prisoners on the list given by the militia as they are accused of serious crimes.
