Kinshasa, April 16 -- About 100 people died in a shipwreck in the northwestern Equateur province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), local media reported on Wednesday, citing a local politician.

"A ferry has caught fire in [the city of] Mbandaka . There are already about 100 dead," Joseph Lokondo was quoted as saying by the the 7sur7 news website.

Congolese broadcaster Okapi reported that no official death toll had been released.

The wreck comes a week after more than 150 people died near the town of Maita, some 20 miles away from Mbandaka, when a boat sank on the Congo River.
