Hubballi (Karnataka), May 24 -- Eight passengers from Kolhapur in Maharashtra were killed in an accident on the Pune-Bangalore National Highway on the outskirts of the Hubli city early Tuesday, police said.

Six of them died on the spot and two in hospital, while 26 others were injured in the head-on collision between a private luxury bus and a truck between Tarihal and Gabbur by-pass section.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Traffic of Hubballi-Dharwad Corporation Police, Gopal Byakod, the Karnataka-registered bus from Kolhapur was on its way to Bangalore and the Maharashtra-registered truck was proceeding from Gabbur towards Maharashtra when the collision happened, resulting in the death of both drivers on the spot.
