Pune, Feb. 11 -- As many as 69 members have been suspended from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for contesting the municipal elections as independents or from other parties after being denied official party tickets.

The action has been taken as a strong message on maintaining organisational discipline within the party. Leaders and office-bearers who contested against official BJP candidates have been suspended for a period of six years.

The disciplinary action was carried out on the orders of BJP State President Ravindra Chavan.
