Chandigarh, Aug. 27 -- : Incessant rains have worsened the flood situation in Punjab's Sultanpur Lodhi region after a temporary dam near Ahlikala village collapsed. The breach has put an additional 30 to 40 villages at risk, compounding the struggles of residents already grappling with floodwaters since August 11.

Efforts to reinforce the dam over the past month proved futile as heavy rainfall in both hilly and lowland areas pushed water levels to around 1.6 lakh cusecs, 50,000 to 55,000 cusecs higher than when the floods first struck.

Villages such as Baupur, Baupur Jatim, and Mehmoodpur, among 16 others, were already inundated when the Ahlikala dam gave way, raising fears that floodwaters could now engulf nearly 30 more villages and sub...
