Sydney, April 18 -- Three men were drowned in separate incidents within hours at beaches on Australia's east coast on Friday.
Police in the state of New South Wales said that a man was pulled unconscious from the water at the harbor in Wollongong, about 70 km south of Sydney, shortly after 6 a.m. local time.
Officers attending the scene attempted to assist the 58-year-old man but he died at the scene.
A NSW Police statement said that initial inquiries led officers to believe that the man was fishing on a rock wall when he was swept into the water.
Hours later, emergency services were called to a beach in the north Sydney suburb of Mosman after receiving reports of concern for the welfare of a man in the water at about 10:20 a.m.
