Mumbai, March 15 -- Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Makarand Jadhav said in the Maharashtra Legislative Council on Saturday that 2,706 farmers in Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of the state committed suicide in the past year from January one to December 31, 2024.
Giving this information in a written reply to a starred question asked by members Shivajirao Garje, Amol Mitkari and others in the upper house, he said that 1,069 farmers in Amravati division and 952 in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division committed suicide due to climate change, drought, crop failure and debt.
Out of the 2,706 cases, 1,563 cases have been qualified, he informed and added that the heirs of 1,101 farmers have been given Rs 30,000 through cheques and Rs 70,000 th...
