New Delhi, July 30 -- At least 2,282 commuters lost their lives last year on one of the world's busiest suburban railway networks, Mumbai's Suburban Railway network, due to various mishaps, including trespassing, collisions with poles, falling from moving trains, and slipping into platform gaps.

A district-wise analysis of fatalities reveals that Mumbai city recorded the highest number of deaths with 1,408 casualties, followed by Thane(615), Navi Mumbai(131), and Raigad with 128 fatalities.

This information was disclosed by Union Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
