Chennai, April 23 -- An estimated 17.69 per cent of the total 5.73 crore electorate have cast their ballots in the first two hours till 9.00 AM as single phase polling to elect the 234-member 17th Legislative Assembly in Tamil Nadu began at 7.00 AM amid tight security, and was progressing smoothly.

Election Commission of India officials said the turn out in the first two hours of polling till 9.00 AM was 17.69 per cent, higher then the 13.80 per cent recorded in th 2021 polls.

An estimated 5.73 crore voters, comprising 2.80 crore men, 2.93 crore women and 7,728 Third Genders, are expected to exercise their democratic right, sealing the fate of 4,023 candidates of which 443 were women.
