Seoul, July 2 -- Sixteen people were injured today as a vehicle dashed into a restaurant building in eastern South Korea, according to Yonhap news agency.

The sport utility vehicle (SUV), driven by a man in his 80s, rushed into the restaurant building at an expressway rest area in Gangneung, some 220 km east of the capital Seoul, at about 11:32 a.m. local time (0232 GMT).

It wounded 16 people inside the building, and six of them were transferred to hospitals for the treatment of minor and serious injuries. None of the injured suffered a life-threatening wound.

The driver, who was not drunk, told police that he had manipulated the accelerator incorrectly.

The police were investigating the details of the accident.
