Gadchiroli, March 20 -- : In a major success for Maharashtra Police, as many as 11 hardcore Naxalites surrendered before security forces in Gadchiroli district on the occasion of Gudi Padwa, officials said on Friday.

The surrendered cadres, including senior functionaries such as Divisional Committee Members and an Area Committee Secretary, were collectively carrying a reward of Rs 66 lakh on their heads. They laid down their arms on Thursday during a programme at the office of the Superintendent of Police.

Police described the surrender as a significant blow to the Naxal movement in the district, following sustained anti-Naxal operations and intensified development initiatives in remote areas.
