Kozhikode, Sept. 4 -- The number of patients suffering from amoebic meningitis, a rare and often fatal brain infection, rose to 11 today with a 10-year-old boy of Malappuram being diagnosed with the disease, sources at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital (KMCH) said.

Three people, including a three-month-old child, have succumbed to the disease, also known as amoebic meningoencephalitis, at KMCH. Two persons undergoing treatment are on ventilator, hospital sources said.

The first confirmed case was reported on August 14 when microbiology laboratory tests at KMCH identified the disease in Anaya (9) of Annappara near Thamarassery Taluk hospital. The child was suffreing from fever with bouts of vomiting. Despite treatment, she died on August ...
