Srinagar, July 11 -- In a significant step towards strengthening Kashmir's iconic handmade carpet industry, the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT), Srinagar, under the aegis of the Handicrafts and Handloom Department, has successfully trained around 11,000 carpet weavers across various districts of the Valley.
The initiative, part of multiple skill development programmes, is aimed at expanding the region's skilled workforce and modernising traditional weaving techniques.
Officials said the weavers have been trained on modified carpet looms which shall go a long way in penetrating niche markets for the famed hand-knotted carpets, which is the second most exported handmade product from Kashmir.
