Mumbai, Dec. 15 -- The Shiv Sena (UBT faction) MLA Kailas Patil on Monday made a serious allegation of a rupees 1,800 crore scam in Maharashtra's school nutrition (mid-day meal) scheme.

In a statement, he claimed that while the tender process mandated the supply of green peas at rupees 134 per kilogram, schools were actually being given white peas costing just around rupees 30 per kilogram.

According to Patil, this malpractice is openly taking place in schools across the state. Citing documents, he said the officially approved rates under the nutrition scheme fixed procurement price of green peas at rupees 134 per kg, but suppliers allegedly delivered cheaper white peas while billing the government at the higher rate.
