Los Angeles, Aug. 11 -- Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema's horror film "Weapons" held the top spot at the North American box office on its opening weekend with an estimated three-day cume of 42.5 million U.S. dollars, data from measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.



Directed by Zach Cregger, the film tells the story of a small town where a group of children from the same class mysteriously vanish into the night at the same time.



The R-rated title earned 27.5 million dollars overseas, for a global debut of 70 million. It holds an approval rating of 95 percent on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes to date, receiving an "A-" grade from audiences on an "A+" to "F" scale polled by market research firm CinemaScore.
