Los Angeles, Dec. 24 -- As it prepares to conclude its voyage, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is turning deliberately towards its origins, formally ushering two cornerstone characters of the franchise, Dr Leonard "Bones" McCoy and Hikaru Sulu, into its fifth and final season.

Thomas Jane has been cast as the sharp-tongued Starfleet doctor Bones McCoy, a character made legendary by DeForest Kelley in "Star Trek: The Original Series", while rising actor Kai Murakami will portray Hikaru Sulu, originally played by George Takei. Both characters will make their debut in the series finale of Season 5, marking a symbolic handover to the era of the original Enterprise crew.
