Dhaka, July 28 -- This year mosquito-borne dengue disease has caused a serious situation. Since January this year, the number of dengue patients has crossed the ten thousand-mark. One of the effects of dengue is to cause a serious drop in the number of platelets circulating through blood in the human body.

Platelets are a type of small blood cell or molecule that helps to clot blood and stop bleeding. In normal human blood the number of platelets per microliter is 100,000 to 400,000. If the platelet level is lower than this, there is a risk of bleeding. If the number of platelets falls below 20,000, it can actually cause bleeding without any injury.
