The fire started at 5:37 am on the ground floor of the 12-storey building, said Anwarul Islam, Warehouse Inspector of Fire Service and Civil Defense (FSCD).

On information, eight firefighting units immediately rushed to the spot. Later, six more units joined them to tame the fire.

The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage were not immediately known.

A total of 42 people have been rescued and safely brought down using various stairways.
