Dhaka, May 13 -- The Election Commission (EC) on Monday night suspended the registration of the Awami League as a political party, said EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.

"Today, the Ministry of Home Affairs banned the activities of Bangladesh Awami League, its affiliated and associate organisations. In continuation of this, the Election Commission has decided to suspend the registration of the Awami League," he said at a press briefing around 9:15 pm on Monday.

He said the EC has already issued a gazette notification in this regard.

"We have issued a gazette notification accordingly. You (media) will get a copy from BG Press soon," he added.
