A trending hashtag on Sina Weibo declares, "The US is fighting a trade war while asking for more eggs."
The phrase, launched by China's state broadcaster CCTV, highlights the irony of the US seeking help from allies to secure egg imports amid a shortage caused by avian flu.
Egg prices were a major talking point during last year's US presidential election. Trump won with promises to bring down living costs.
