, Sept. 1 -- magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 100.

The quake, which hit at a shallow depth of 8 kilometers (6 miles), left dozens of homes buried under rubble, raising fears that the death toll could climb further, according to Taliban government sources, reports BBC.

Rescue operations have been hampered in remote mountainous areas, many of which are accessible only by air due to landslides and flooding.

Taliban authorities have appealed to international humanitarian organizations for urgent assistance.

The tremor was felt as far away as Kabul and Pakistan's capital Islamabad, more than 300 kilometers (186 miles) from the epicenter.
