New Delhi, Sept. 9 -- India and China accused each other of firing warning shots at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh to intimidate and push back each other.

The incident took place near Shenpao mountain close to the south bank of Pangong Tso (Lake) on September 7.

The use of firearms along the LAC marks a serious escalation in border tensions as the previous instance of shots being fired at the de-facto border was in 1975.

The Indian Army in a statement said that China continues to "undertake provocative activities to escalate" the situation at the border and it was the Chinese People's Liberation Army troops who "fired a few rounds in the air" in an attempt to intimidate Indian troops.
