Rio de Janeiro, Feb. 20 -- Brazil has announced that the next BRICS summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro on 6-7 July. The country, which will lead the bloc of developing economies throughout 2025, aims to focus on global governance reform and strengthening cooperation among Global South nations, according to a government statement.
BRICS was founded in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining a year later. Initially formed as a counterweight to the Group of Seven (G7) leading economies, the bloc expanded last year to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia has also been invited, while Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia have formally applied for membership.
