Nigeria, Feb. 3 -- The bitter political tussle reignited in January after Wike-loyal lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly launched impeachment proceedings against Fubara, accusing him of misconduct, including unbudgeted spending from state funds.
This is not the first time Tinubu has intervened. In December 2023, he brokered a fragile peace between Fubara and Wike, which quickly collapsed, culminating in the declaration of a six-month emergency rule in the state on March 18, 2025, and the temporary suspension of the governor.
In the latest move, ahead of his official trip to Turkiye on January 26, Tinubu ordered an immediate suspension of all impeachment efforts against Fubara-though under strict conditions.
