Nigeria, Jan. 5 -- Security sources said the incident occurred on Sunday when the convoy was on routine operational movement along a key axis in the area. The IED, allegedly planted by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), detonated as the convoy passed, causing significant casualties.

The injured soldiers were said to have been evacuated to a military medical facility, where they are currently receiving treatment. Their condition was not immediately disclosed.

Damasak and surrounding communities have remained flashpoints of insurgent activities, with ISWAP increasingly resorting to the use of landmines and IEDs to target military patrols and logistics convoys.
