Nigeria, Jan. 29 -- In a courageous and emotional interview, former referee David Coote has come out as gay, sharing his struggles with hiding his true identity and battling addiction.

Coote, who officiated in the Premier League and Championship, spoke candidly about his journey, revealing the deep sense of shame he felt during his teenage years.

Coote recalled the difficulties he faced in coming to terms with his sexuality, confessing that he didn't come out to his parents until he was 21 and to his friends until he was 25.
