Dhaka, March 18 -- As the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) approaches its expected commercial launch in early 2026, concerns are growing among energy experts regarding its financial viability. Many are questioning whether the high cost of the project could turn it into a "white elephant."
The idea for the RNPP project was conceived in 2009, with a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Bangladesh and the Russian Federation on May 13, 2009, for the "Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy."
