Dhaka, Oct. 17 -- BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said the people are eager for an election to rescue the country, but certain vested quarters are trying to delay the polls by mounting pressure on the government with various demands.

"People want an election to save the nation. Yet, some political groups are conspiring to postpone it. The Proportional Representation (PR) system is something the public neither understands nor demands. Once the election is held and a new government takes office, all other matters can be discussed in parliament," Fakhrul said.

He made the remarks while exchanging views at Danarhat Eidgah ground under Begunbari Union in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila.
