Dhaka, April 5 -- The sixth summit of BIMSTEC, an alliance of seven countries bordering the Bay of Bengal, concluded on Friday in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.

Professor Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, who attended the two-day Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multilateral Technical and Economic Cooperation conference, was officially handed over the responsibility as the chairman of this regional body.

It is to be noted that are Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Nepal and Bhutan are the member countries of BIMSTEC. There is no alternative to regional cooperation in various fields such as defense, trade, economy, crime control and environment.
