Dhaka, March 9 -- The Election Commission (EC) will begin distributing the pending smart national identity cards (NID) from April 12, following the completion of the ongoing voter update programme.

The decision was made during the EC's recent monthly coordination meeting.

Brigadier General Mohammad Azizur Rahman Siddiqui, director of the second phase of the Identification System for Enhancing Access to Services (IDEA) project, explained that the distribution of smart cards had been delayed due to limited availability of the necessary equipment, which was primarily being used for the voter update process.

He also highlighted that ongoing technical work with these devices further contributed to the delay in the distribution timeline.
