Dhaka, Feb. 11 -- The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has issued a directive to take strict action against CNG and petrol-run auto-rickshaw drivers who charge fares above the meter rate. Under this order, drivers found guilty of overcharging could face a fine of up to Tk 50,000, six months' imprisonment, or both.
"Under Section 35(3) of the Road Transport Act 2018, auto-rickshaws with route permits are obligated to transport passengers to any destination. Drivers cannot demand or collect fares higher than the meter rate," reads a letter signed by BRTA Director (Engineering) Sitangshu Shekhar Bishwas issued Monday.
