Dhaka, Aug. 31 -- Reasserting the government's zero-tolerance policy on mob violence, the Bangladesh Army has pledged to take a firm stand against any such disorder to safeguard public safety and restore citizens' confidence.

In a statement released on its official Facebook page at 12:29am on Saturday, the army stressed its readiness to adopt even stricter measures if circumstances demand.

The announcement came in the wake of violent clashes between Jatiyo Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad activists in Dhaka's Kakrail area on Friday evening, which left several injured. Police were initially deployed to contain the situation but later called in army support as the unrest worsened.
