Dhaka, Aug. 14 -- The newly formed faction of the Jatiyo Party, led by Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud as chairman and ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader as secretary general, has applied to the Election Commission to recognise their recently elected committee as the party's "mainstream" leadership.

The faction held the party's 10th National Council in Dhaka's Gulshan on 9 August, excluding the GM Quader-led group - where Anisul and Ruhul were elected to their posts through a voice vote by councillors.

According to the letter sent to the EC on 10 August, nearly 5,000 councillors from across the country participated in the council at a Gulshan community centre, electing four individuals to top positions in the central executive committee.
