Srinagar, July 30 -- A typical Indian family doesn't visit the hospital every year. But most of them visit a doctor.

They pick up prescribed medicines, undergo diagnostic tests, and go for preventive check-ups. These expenses are routine, frequent, and expensive.

Yet for years, health insurance in India has turned away from them.

The focus has remained on in-patient hospitalisation. Only if you're admitted - say for a surgery, accident, or serious illness - does your insurance step in. For everything else, from a sore throat to blood pressure checks to recurring medication, you pay out of pocket.
