Srinagar, July 3 -- A Division Bench comprising Justice Sanjeev Kumar and Justice Sanjay Parihar dismissed a government appeal challenging its responsibility but reduced the compensation from Rs.24.3 lakh to Rs.11.2 lakh, citing calculation errors in the earlier verdict.

The court observed that Nazir Ahmad, 45, died on July 24, 2013, when an 11,000 KV live electric wire fell on him in the Uri area of north Kashmir's Baramulla district - a clear result of negligence on the part of the government.

"Maintenance of electric supply live lines is the duty of the government authorities, especially when dealing with such hazardous activities," the Bench said, adding that negligence in such cases is to be presumed.
