Srinagar, May 27 -- In a hushed Sopore hamlet, Zainab's house sits locked and lifeless. A year ago, her husband, Imran Lone, died of a heart attack at 48, leaving her and their two children a modest home and an apple orchard.

But weeks after his burial, Imran's brothers arrived. "This land belongs to us," they said. "You're not family anymore. Leave."

Zainab, 45, packed a few clothes and took her kids to her parents' home in Pattan. The orchard, their lifeline, was sold off. "I didn't know I had rights," she said, her voice breaking. "No one told me."

Zainab's story isn't rare in Kashmir. It's the silent, unaddressed agony of countless widows and orphans, robbed of their Islamic inheritance by greed and custom.
