India, Feb. 13 -- The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Friday informed the Legislative Assembly that the Achan garbage dumping site in Srinagar will undergo phased scientific remediation, saying abrupt closure is not feasible without an alternative facility.
In a written reply to a question by MLA Shamim Firdous, the Housing and Urban Development Department said the Achan site has historically functioned as the municipal solid waste facility for Srinagar and has accumulated legacy waste over several decades.
The government acknowledged public concerns over odour, leachate discharge and potential health hazards linked to the site.
