Nigeria, Dec. 31 -- The National Working Committee of the Labour Party led by its Chairman, Julius on Wednesday, described the defection of its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress as a "liberation" for the party, saying it regrets fielding him as its flagbearer in the last general election.

The party's National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, made this known in a statement issued in Abuja, hours after Obi formally announced his defection in Enugu.

The LP leadership said Obi's exit merely formalised a political separation that had already occurred months earlier amid a prolonged leadership crisis within the party.
