Nigeria, Oct. 23 -- following a rigorous screening session on October 16, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sworn in Professor Joash Amupitan, the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Tinubu charged Prof. Amupitan to protect the integrity of Nigeria's elections and electoral process as well as strengthen the institutional capacity of INEC.

Amupitan, a professor of law and senior advocate of Nigeria, succeeded Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who bowed out of the active service, after spending 10 years as chairman of the electoral body.

President Tinubu had earlier sought Senate's confirmation of Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
