Bangladesh, March 9 -- Diabetes has become a cause for global health concern and it imposes a huge social and economic impact on a nation. Worldwide, the number of people with diabetes in 1980 was 108 million which stood at 422 million in 2014, reports the World Health Organization (WHO).

It is worrisome to know that the diabetes prevalence is high in low and middle-income countries like Bangladesh. Diabetes is a major threat to the increasing number of kidney failures, heart attacks, stroke, and blindness.

Diabetes significantly increases healthcare expenditure and is likely to impose a huge economic burden on the healthcare systems of our country.
