Bangladesh, Nov. 15 -- After showing signs of decline in price, local onion market has once again heated up, this time making a record price hike. Now Tk 170 is charged for a kilogram of onion. The onion prices are on the rise for about two months and the recent assurance that the market was under control brought a sigh of relief for customers.
But, the latest surge in onion price has come as a puzzle because different varieties of onion are imported and more are being imported to meet the domestic shortfall. It's time the Ministry of Commerce should convene a meeting inviting all stakeholders to identify reasons for onion price hike and take remedial measures.
