Dhaka, May 18 -- The country's banking sector has lost its capacity to support macroeconomic stability due to a lack of transparency and accountability, Dr Fahmida said on Saturday.

In a debate competition arranged by Debate for Democracy (DfD) on the FDC premises in Dhaka city, the executive director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) said Bangladesh Bank (BB) should be allowed to work independently.

Regarding the preparation of the central bank for merging banks, Dr Fahmida said that it is inadequate.

She suggested that the BB should ensure a free flow of information to journalists to help them serve as watchdogs.
