Nairobi, March 27 -- African Trade and Investment Development Insurance (Atidi) has provided a political risk insurance cover for the Songa Energy $7.7 million Ruvyironza hydropower project in Burundi.

The 1.65 megawatts (MW) run-of-the-river Upper Ruvyironza Project is the first hydro Independent Power Producer (IPP) and will be the second to be connected to the national grid after the 7.5 MW Upper Mulembwe solar project also insured by Atidi.

Construction began in May 2023 and the project is forecast to begin commercial operations by the end of this year.

The project is financed by Virunga Power, which also operates renewable power projects and rural distribution grids.
