Dhaka, Aug. 16 -- Major US airlines warned that they will have to slash tens of thousands of jobs in October when the Cares Act payroll support programme for the aviation industry expires, leading many workers and their families towards destruction.

Fired airline workers will enter an economy still reeling from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and where weekly unemployment claims remain above 1 million.

Among the largest airlines in the US, thousands of workers have already taken voluntary separation agreements, early retirement or volunteered leave of absences as part of efforts to reduce workforce to mitigate expected furloughs and layoffs in October.
