New Delhi, Jan. 25 -- An encounter broke out on Saturday between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Awantipora town of Pulwama district.

According to initial reports, top Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) commander and two other terrorists are believed to be trapped at the site.

The security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the area after receiving inputs about the presence of terrorist there.

The exchange of fire is currently underway, an official said.

Kashmir Zone Police earlier in a tweet said, "#Encounter has started at #Awantipora. #Police & security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow."
