ABU DHABI, Aug. 24 -- The RuPay card, India's indigenous card scheme created by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that offers a domestic, open-loop, multilateral system allowing all Indian banks and financial institutions to participate in electronic payments, was officially launched in the UAE Saturday in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the first country in the Gulf and the third country after Singapore and Bhutan where this card has been launched.

Twenty one business groups in the UAE were present in the launch event at the Emirates Palace here and pledged to accept the card.

Modi swiped his RuPpay card for buying Indian sweets.
