NEW DELHI, Aug. 24 -- Former Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley passed away Saturday after a prolonged illness. He was 66.

"It is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of Arun Jaitley," the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said in a brief statement.

Jaitley was admitted to AIIMS August 9 after he complained of weakness and palpitation.

On Friday, AIIMS said that his health condition had deteriorated.

Jaitley served as the Finance Minister in the first term of the NDA government but decided not to take part in this year's general elections citing health reasons.
