COLOMBO, April 22 -- A spokesman for the Sri Lanka police said on Monday that 290 people have been confirmed dead in the series of bombings that targeted churches and high-end hotels on Easter Sunday. Authorities also said they defused an explosive near Colombo's main airport, the intended ninth target.

Over 400 people have been injured in attacks that were the worst the island nation has seen since the end of the decades-long ethnic war a decade ago.

An official of the Sri Lankan Air Force said an explosive was defused close to the city's main airport, the Bandaranaike International Airport on Sunday night, preventing further devastation.
